Art al Quadrat ‘De falsas gemelas a gemelas verdaderas /From false twins to real twins’

El binomio formado por Mònica y Gema del Rey Jordà presenta una exposición intrínsecamente íntima y perfectamente documentada  sobre su  situación personal. Inquietudes, dudas, sensaciones y sentimientos contrarios acerca de ser realmente mellizas se esclarecen aquí, al mismo tiempo que se confirman las sospechas salvaguardadas durante años. La obra que muestran  es un manifiesto a las almas gemelas,  a los vínculos que se crean entre los gemelos además de querer reivindicar, conmemorar y honrar a todos aquellos iguales que han sufrido torturas, separaciones, raptos y vejaciones a lo largo de la historia.

Art al Quadrat narra en primera persona su propia experiencia y lo que para ellas supone el hecho de ser gemelas y trabajar juntas. Para ello, parten desde el mismísimo inicio, proyectándose juntas en posición fetal compartiendo el útero materno, en la búsqueda impertérrita de conectar, de hilar, de compartir paso a paso sus vidas y sus vivencias por separado. Poco a poco, descubrimos cómo se reafirman como seres individuales pero incompletos sin la una en la otra. Es curioso cómo, a pesar de compartir el mismo ADN, pueden llegar a ser tan distintas; y es que la herencia y el entorno no son los únicos factores a tener en cuenta. Según la epigenética, un campo  nuevo de investigación, existe un tercer agente en discordia que en algunos casos sirve de puente entre el ambiente y los propios genes, mientras que en otros actúa por sí solo para determinar quiénes somos.

¿Hasta que punto las diferencias fisiológicas entre ambas les afecta a la hora de sentirse diferentes, más individuales? ¿Qué sucede mientras realizan y esperan los resultados de las pruebas de ADN? ¿Cómo afronta cada una de ellas el hecho de ser iguales pero a la par tan dispares? ¿Qué pasa cuando están separadas a 2.143 kilómetrosde distancia? Muchas de las respuestas a estas preguntas se obtienen a lo largo del recorrido por una obra que, al mismo tiempo que plantea miles de interrogantes sobre el mundo tan fascinante de los gemelos, también pretende responder a todas esas incógnitas mediante un trabajo de investigación que han clasificado en cuatro planos: el físico, el mental, el emocional y el espiritual. La parte física está representada por un collage realizado con los resultados de las pruebas de ADN, mientras que la mental se plasma a través de una entrevista recíproca que mantienen ambas y donde se confiesan la una con la otra llegando a la conclusión de que al estar unidas producen más energía, de ahí que A² = G² + M² (Art al Quadrat es la suma de sus componentes al cuadrado). En cuanto a la parte emocional es más que palpable la conexión que comparten como se aprecia con las videocartas que se mandaban la una a la otra durante su separación, no perdiendo detalle de los pequeños cambios acontecidos en dicha ausencia. Para terminar, las dos se someten a un análisis del ‘aura’, donde se puede ver el impresionante intercambio de energía vital que existe entre ambas a través de la fotografía Kirlian, así como su aura silueteada o el árbol kabalístico de la vida. De nuevo, se observan las diferencias innegables de cada una de ellas.

En definitiva, la obra de Art al Quadrat se basa en las cosas que las rodean: la familia, la memoria, los problemas de su ciudad natal, de las personas y los suyos propios, sus inquietudes, así como los países en los que han vivido. Su arte es un reflejo de lo cotidiano, lo pequeño y lo invisible, es decir, logran rescatar del olvido y evidenciar aquello que a primera vista pasa desapercibido ante nuestros sentidos. Estas dos artistas están marcando su propio territorio en el mundo del arte, en el que éste debe concebirse como la afirmación de la esencia del mismo. Reivindican y utilizan su cuerpo como principal medio de expresión con la ayuda de materiales que tienen a mano como el hilo, la lana, el papel o la tela de diversos colores y texturas, que bajo una perspectiva individual llegan a alcanzar una global, creando, así, una visión, una sensación de esfuerzo y fuerza unificada que resulta única y entrañable. Y para ello, se sirven, sobre todo, del impacto visual usando primero la técnica del video acompañado de texto, y después haciendo uso de la fotografía. Este es, sin duda, un trabajo conjunto, sin discriminación, unido por un fin común: el arte.

The Kybalion

The duo of Mònica and Gema del Rey Jordà presents an intrinsically intimate and perfectly-documented exhibition on their personal situation. Their worries, doubts, conflicting feelings and sentiments about really being twins are clarified here, while the suspicions harboured for years are confirmed. The work they exhibit is a manifesto to twin spirits, to the bonds that are created between twins, in addition to the desire to vindicate, commemorate and honour all those twins who have been subjected to torture, separation, abduction and abuse throughout history.

Art al Quadrat give a first-person account of their own experience and what being twins and working together means to them. To do so, they start from the very beginning, projecting themselves together in the foetal position sharing their mother’s womb, boldly seeking to connect, string together, gradually share their separate lives and experiences. Little by little, we discover how they reaffirm themselves as individuals who are, however, incomplete without one another. It is strange how, despite sharing the same DNA, they can become so different: heredity and environment are not the only factors to be taken into account. According to epigenetics, a new field of research, there is a third agent at work, which in some cases acts as a bridge between the environment and our own genes, while in others it acts alone in determining who we are.

To what extent do the physiological differences between them affect them in feeling different, more individual? What happens when they take and wait for the results of DNA tests? How does each of them deal with the fact that they are the same but at the same time so different? What happens when they are separated by a distance of 2,143 kilometres? Many of the answers to these questions are obtained in the course of a piece of work which, while raising thousands of questions about the fascinating world of twins, also seeks to answer all these mysteries through a research study that has been classified on four levels: physical, mental, emotional and spiritual. The physical part is represented by a collage made with the DNA test results, while the mental aspect is embodied in a reciprocal interview between the artists, in which they make confessions to each other, reaching the conclusion that by being together they generate more energy, hence A² = G² + M² (Art al Quadrat is the sum of its components squared). In terms of the emotional aspect, the connection they share is most tangible as evidenced in the video letters they sent to each other during their separation, which record the details of the small changes that took place during this absence. Lastly, the artists are subjected to an ‘aura’ analysis, where you can see the amazing exchange of life energy between them through Kirlian photography as well as the silhouetted aura or Kabbalistic tree of life. Again, the differences which can be observed between them are undeniable.

In short, Art al Quadrat’s work is based on the things around them: family, memory, the problems in their home town, and that people and they themselves have, their concerns, as well as countries where they have lived. Their art is a reflection of everyday life, the small and invisible. They manage to rescue from oblivion and display what at first glance goes unnoticed by our senses. These two artists are establishing their own territory in the art world, in which this should be seen as the affirmation of its essence. They claim and use their body as the primary means of expression with the support of materials they have at hand such as thread, wool, paper or fabric of different colours and textures, which from an individual perspective achieve a global one, creating, in this way, a vision, a sense of effort and unified strength that is unique and intimate. For this purpose, they use, above all, visual impact, employing first video techniques together with text, and then making use of photography. This is, unquestionably, a joint piece of work, without discrimination, united by a common goal, art.
